SMOKELESS TOBACCO

SMOKELESS TOBACCO

Smokeless tobacco — such as chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, and snus — carries serious health risks, even though it's not inhaled like cigarettes. Here are the primary dangers:

THE DANGERS:

1. Cancer Risk

  • Oral Cancer: Includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat.

  • Esophageal & Pancreatic Cancer: Chemicals in smokeless tobacco (like nitrosamines) increase risk.

  • Stomach and Colon Cancer: Long-term use may also raise risks here.

2. Oral Health Problems

  • Gum Disease (Periodontitis): Leads to gum recession and tooth loss.

  • Leukoplakia: White patches in the mouth that can become cancerous.

  • Tooth Decay: High sugar content and dry mouth contribute to cavities.

  • Tooth Abrasion: Grit in the product can wear down tooth enamel.

3. Heart Disease and Stroke

  • Nicotine increases heart rate, blood pressure, and artery constriction — elevating the risk for:

    • Heart attack

    • Stroke

    • Blood clots

4. Addiction

  • Smokeless tobacco contains high levels of nicotine, making it highly addictive.

  • Users may experience withdrawal symptoms like irritability, cravings, and mood swings.

5. Reproductive and Pregnancy Risks

  • Increases risk of stillbirth, low birth weight, and preterm delivery in pregnant users.

  • May reduce sperm count and fertility in men.

6. Social and Psychological Effects

  • Stained teeth and bad breath can affect self-esteem.

  • May lead to social stigma or limit professional and personal opportunities.

7. Gateway to Smoking or Dual Use

  • Some users, especially teens, transition to cigarette smoking or use both — increasing overall health risk
