DWI Arrest




HAMMOND – Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports the arrest of Gregory Smith, 23 of Kraft Rd. in Hammond, LA. Smith was arrested after Deputies investigated a vehicle crash on South Range Rd. Smith was arrested and charged with DWI, careless operation of a vehicle, one outstanding FTA and for being a fugitive of another jurisdiction.

On May 12, 2010 at approximately 1:00 am, Deputies Jonathan Williams, Scott Hinson and John Eady responded to the single vehicle crash on S. Range Rd. Upon arrival, Deputy Williams observed the sole occupant / driver of the vehicle (2002 Mazda Protégé) to be moving around inside the vehicle attempting to locate applicable information to be turned over to Deputy Hinson for the crash report.

Deputy Williams requested the driver, later identified as Gregory A. Smith Jr., to exit the vehicle. As the driver exited the vehicle, Deputy Williams smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverages permeating from Gregory's breath. Deputy Williams asked Gregory if he suffered any injuries during the crash to which he stated he did not.

At this time, deputies ensured the drivers safety and conducted a roadside investigation. As a result of this investigation, Smith was taken into custody charged accordingly. Smith also had one FTA for a traffic violation and an outstanding warrant from the HPD
